Membership Benefits

Professional Learning Resources

  • Annual Summer Institute (In-Person & Virtual)
Join us for an immersive experience designed to elevate your instructional practices. Offered both in-person and virtually, the Summer Institute focuses on building rigorous, engaging, and equitable math instruction through the design of high-quality lessons and units.

  • New to SVMI Meetings
The New to SVMI meetings are designed for classroom teachers, teacher leaders, coaches/TOSAs, and site and district administrators who are new to the Silicon Valley Mathematics Initiative. New administrators and leaders of existing member districts are also encouraged to attend to learn about our updates. These meetings are held in August, September, and January.
  • SVMI Network Forum: Meet Ups (4x Year)

The SVMI Network Forum: Meet Ups [formerly Math Network Meetings] are designed for teacher leaders, coaches/TOSAs, site and district administrators to improve and refine their practice and strengthen their understanding around current research- and evidenced-based practices about math content, teaching strategies, and learning theory. These opportunities are designed to include new learnings coupled with collaborative networking opportunities with other member districts to hear about their mathematical journey. The Meet Ups are offered virtually four times a year.

  • SVMI Network Forum: Summit & Workshop (2x Year)

The SVMI Network Forum: Summit & Workshop [formerly Principals as Instructional Leader Meetings] are designed as a full day of learning and collaboration for teacher leaders, coaches/TOSAs, site and district administrators. The biannual summits aims to build awareness and deepen understanding at the intersection of instructional leadership, mathematics, equity, and engagement. Nationally recognized speakers feature relevant and meaningful topics during the Summit [AM session] which is followed by facilitated time during the Workshop [PM sessions] to allow for the strategizing of new learnings with your local team. The Summit and Workshop is offered in-person.

  • Member Professional Learning Sessions (In Person and Virtual)
The Professional Learning Series (Fall and Spring) is designed for classroom teachers and coaches/TOSAs to participate in interactive professional learning centered on enhancing one’s pedagogical mathematics content knowledge, coupled with best instructional practices, as well as intentional and impactful lesson and unit design. The PLs are facilitated by current classroom educators and designed by grade spans: Grades TK-2, Grades 3-5, Middle School, and High School. The series generally follows the theme from the Summer Institute; however, participants do not have to attend the Summer Institute in order to attend these PLs. The series is offered both virtually and in-person. Deepen your pedagogical and content knowledge with sessions designed for TK-12 educators with a series of PL in both the Fall & Spring Semesters.

Formative Tools that Elevate Instruction

  • MAC/MARS Performance Tasks

Library of high quality, performance-based tasks aligned to the Common Core State Standards.

- Over 1400 performance assessment tasks

- Grades Kindergarten through Precalculus and Data Science

- Used for formative assessment and as teaching tools

- Available in English and Spanish

- Scaffolded tasks that increase in complexity

- Emphasize reasoning, problem solving, and justification

- High cognitive demand

- Gives students opportunities to engage in the Standards for Mathematical Practice

Each task is accompanied by a suite of tools, including:

- Point-scoring rubric

- Tools for Teachers, including sample re-engagement lessons and data

- Standardizing papers for equitable scoring practice

  • Problem of the Month (POM)
A set of progressively more challenging, non-routine problems, spanning primary through high school. Designed to encourage creative thinking and perseverance in problem-solving.

- Library of over 60 five-level problems

- Each POM’s 5 levels address same conceptual topic, increasing in sophistication

- Open-ended and non-scaffolded

- Each POM accompanied by Teacher Notes: mathematical theories, content, and solutions

    • Formative Re-engaging Lessons (FRLs)
K-5 lessons that feature authentic student work, centered on performance tasks, to revisit mathematical concepts in collaborative, discussion-rich settings.

    • Assessment Interviews
TK - 3rd Grade one-on-one interview protocols that provide insight into early learners’ mathematical thinking.

MAC Summative Assessment Program *

The Mathematics Assessment Collaborative (MAC) assessment program, developed in partnership with the Mathematics Assessment Research Service (MARS), provides a set of high quality, performance-based assessments aligned to the Common Core State Standards.

Each Spring, member institutions have access to the Annual MAC Exam - a summative assessment designed to measure conceptual proficiency across major content strands.

- Administer on paper or online

- Grades 2 through Precalculus and Data Science

- Tasks for both Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2 and Integrated High School tracks

- Score online or by hand on paper

- Online scoring via qAssess for secure scoring and real-time analytics

- Suite of 5 new performance assessment tasks per course

To support implementation, we offer:

- MAC Scoring Training for consistent rubric application

- MAC Orientation and Registration Meetings General

- MAC Meetings for planning and data analysis

- A comprehensive Technical Manual for exam policies and protocols

- SVMI can score your exams for an additional fee
